The apartment door code is in your inbox, and your inbox won’t load. A few minutes before you fly could spare you the hassle, and one travel eSIM offers backup data even after your plan ends

Arriving at your destination after dark, with an email containing your apartment access details refusing to load, is a frustrating start to any trip. Instead of battling for airport Wi-Fi alongside other travellers, it pays to sort out your mobile data before you leave home.

Whether your getaway is a weekend in Prague or a week in the Canaries, it’s worth checking what your mobile provider charges for data abroad. Some UK plans include European roaming, so you may not need to buy anything extra. But if your plan charges by the day, a travel eSIM gives you another price to compare.

An eSIM is a digital SIM, so there’s nothing to swap out of your phone. If your handset is unlocked and supports eSIMs, you can add a second line for mobile data while keeping your usual SIM and WhatsApp number. It’s worth setting up your travel eSIM at home, where you’ve got reliable Wi-Fi and nobody’s waiting for you to work out how to get into town.

Holafly lets you look up your destination and choose a data plan for the length of your trip. It offers both single-country and regional eSIMs, which are worth comparing if you’re visiting Christmas markets in more than one country. Check the plan details if you intend to use your phone as a hotspot, as allowances for sharing data with other devices can vary.

One feature worth a look is Holafly’s Always On. If you leave the eSIM installed after your plan ends, it gives you 1GB of backup data every 30 days at no extra cost in supported destinations. Unused data doesn’t carry over, so check where it works before relying on it. It could come in handy if a delayed flight takes you past the end of your plan, or if you arrive on your next trip and realise you’ve forgotten to arrange data.

If you decide to use a travel eSIM, check when your plan starts, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch off data roaming on your regular SIM. Keeping your UK SIM active won’t prevent your provider from charging for calls or texts, so check those rates separately.

The simplest way to tell if it’s worth it is to enter your destination and trip length, then compare the total with what your network would charge. Five minutes on the sofa beats trying to work it all out at arrivals.
