Montrose is celebrating a milestone for Lyons

Montrose winger Blair Lyons described reaching 250 appearances for the club as “surreal”.

The 29-year-old initially arrived at Links Park from University of Stirling in 2019 and then returned for a second spell following a brief stay with Partick Thistle.

Lyons hit the milestone last month when Montrose travelled away to Alloa Athletic, and is now the third longest‑serving player in the squad, behind only Sean Dillon and Graham Webster.

At the End of Season Awards he achieved the double for the second-year running, being named both both the Young Fans’ Player of the Year and the Stan Thornton Player of the Year.

Lyons told Montrose FC TV: “It feels surreal and came quite around quite fast, but I’ve been buzzing to get it because it's a big accolade for the club.

"Obviously, I joined in 2019 and racked up quite a few games since then, even with having a year away.

"Players wise obviously there hasn't been too much change until recent years, but the philosophy has always been the same really.

"We've always been a hardworking team, but I would say the league now compared to when I joined in 2019 is miles better standard wise

“As a winger I always judge myself on goals and assist, I think for the last three years I've got double figures, so to do that four years in a row would be a big thing for me.”

Montrose director Mark Clark paid tribute, saying: “Reaching 250 games at any club is a special milestone, but doing it at a club where you are so clearly valued makes it even more meaningful.

"Blair represents everything we want a Montrose player to be – committed, exciting to watch, and deeply connected to our supporters.

“We’re incredibly proud of him and grateful for everything he continues to bring to the team.”

Montrose made it back to back wins in the league on Saturday as they beat Queen of the South 2-1 at Links Park.

Gary Oliver gave the home side the lead after only three minutes, but Nicky Clark equalised just after the break.

Oliver grabbed the winner a few minutes later from the penalty spot following a foul on Jake Sutherland.

Montrose will head north on Saturday as they take a trip to Peterhead.
