Cameron wins his first ranking title in Surrey

Montrose tennis player Cameron Fryer recorded his first world ranking match victory over the weekend – and then went on to win the doubles title.

He and his regular partner Kyle McKay were unseeded wildcard entrants in the M25 Redbridge, Lexus British Pro Series event, but beat a Russian pair in their opening match with ease.

They then narrowly beat the third, second and fourth seeds, securing the title with a 6-4, 6-7 10-6 win over Tanapatt Nirundorn of Thailand and Pablo Perez Ramos of Spain.

The ATP rankings had not been updated at the time of writing, but the two players should debut with a world ranking inside the top 1,200 in doubles, which is in the upper half of the placings.

That will make it much easier for them to get in more professional tournaments.

This followed on from Fryer's singles title at the Ayrshire Tennis Scotland Tour event the previous weekend, cementing his position atop the Tennis Scotland Tour leader board.

He beat former 10-year touring pro and top seed Jonny O'Mara from Arbroath in the final, 6-4 6-4.

The 21-year-old, who still turns out regularly for Montrose Tennis Club in Tayside fixtures, is a star on the Stirling University tennis team and will play there for one more year.

He is not the only Montrose member to claim a title recently, as Orin Forbes won the Moray Scottish Tour singles championship in late September.

He beat Henry Archibold of Elgin Tennis Club 4-3 4-2 in the shortened fast four format.

Montrose player Lewis Simpson reached the semi-finals of that event and another, Eddie Baxter, lost to Forbes in the first round 4-3, 4-1, but won a match in the consolation event.

Montrose mixed doubles second team won a late rescheduled match against Forthill 1 8-4 and will join Montrose 1 in the Tayside first division next year.

Jenna Henderson and Lewis Simpson won three sets for Montrose, as did Wendy Sanger and Robin Kerr. Amy Tewson and Eddie Baxter secured the additional points.

In the club's mixed doubles Stevenson Cup, Jenna Henderson was the ladies winner and Callum Cooper was the men's top scorer.

The event was inaugurated by Jean Stevenson, who has been a Montrose member for decades and met her husband-to-be John at the club.

Jean initiated the tournament after he died from a short illness some years ago, with the couple having been married for 48 years.

Montrose member Lyn Kearney returned from the British Transplant Games in Sheffield with a gold in over-70 tennis and bronze in over-70 tables tennis from.

Lyn defeated the over-50 and over-60 tennis entrants in round-robin play, but was only awarded the over-70 medal.

She said: Winning medals is nice, but I try to use my story as a platform to raise awareness of organ donation and the benefits of transplantation.

"My message is think about it and make your decision, record your decision at organdonation.scot and tell your family.”
