Welcome for new Arbroath GP walk-in service

Arbroath is set to benefit from a new GP-led walk-in centre, First Minister John Swinney has announced.

The new service in Angus is one of 24 to be allocated to additional areas across Scotland.

This will take taking the total number of centres, planned or already operational, to benefit from GP-led walk-in provision, to 40.

Local politicians have welcomed the announcement, which they say will provide an important boost to access to primary care in Arbroath, offering local people another route to healthcare and helping to ease pressure on existing GP practices and other frontline NHS services.

Angus South MSP Lloyd Melville said: “I am delighted that the work Lara and I have been doing behind the scenes to advocate for a walk-in GP centre in Arbroath has now come to fruition.

“This builds on the SNP’s work to improve access to GP services, and will enable folk in Arbroath to be seen quicker.

“We promised to secure a walk-in for Angus and that is exactly what we have delivered.”

Lara Bird, Arbroath and Broughty Ferry MP, added that the new facility will bring tangible benefits for the local community.

She said: “This is a fantastic announcement that reflects the hard work that Lloyd and I have been doing with Scot Gov since we were both elected.

“We know how important access to healthcare is to folk across Arbroath, and this initiative from the SNP is just one small step in delivering for people across Angus.

“Folk across Arbroath will feel the huge benefits of this clinic, as there will no longer be the stress of the 8am rush and folk will be able to rest easier, knowing that they will always be able to see a GP when they need it.

I am immensely proud to be announcing this today - another example of the SNP delivering for the people of Scotland.”

The announcement comes as the Scottish Government continues to expand access to community-based healthcare, with the new service set to provide an additional point of access for patients who need advice or treatment without requiring a routine appointment.
