Proposal to close A90 junction back on table as part of planning application

Proposals to close off a junction at one of the main entrances to Forfar has again been put forward as a part of a development at the west end of town.

Muir Homes and Scotia Homes have submitted an application for planning permission in principle to Angus Council for the plan, which involves hundreds of new homes at Westfield. The scheme was first put forward in 2024.

Westfield is the largest area of allocated housing land in Angus which is still to be developed. While the exact number of new homes will be part of a detailed application, around 300 are expected to be built on the 55-hectare site.

And the potential closure of Lochlands junction on theA90 dual carriageway has been put forward again.

Planning consultants Halliday Fraser Munro say the Westfield design has been driven by a “landscape-led approach to high-quality placemaking”.

The firms previously indicated their intention to create ‘pockets’ of housing on the land.

A new spine road, running from Dundee Road to Glamis Road, would run through the site. The first phase would be at the foot of Westfield Loan closest to Glamis Road, with a barrier of land to remain as undeveloped green space.

The applicants say this is because on-site noise mitigation measures to protect residents from the Don & Low textile operations are unlikely to be achieved.

The applicants also argue future closure of the A90 Lochlands junction could even be a benefit to the town’s West Port.

Northbound traffic would use the A94 Glamis junction underpass to get to Forfar. The proposals remain undetermined and awaiting an official Transport Scotland response.

But the Lochlands issue and pressure on local services have been raised by the public, with one describing the Lochlands plan as “ridiculous”.

They said: “What mastermind conjured this up? Think about it? More vehicles and less roads.”

One supporter said: “Forfar needs more housing and unfortunately the infrastructure needs to keep up with this demand. Yes, there will be challenges but these need met and resolved.”

The application will be considered in due course.
