Plans lodged for new chicken sheds near Kirriemuir

Plans for a 64,000-capacity free-range poultry facility near Kirriemuir have been lodged with Angus Council.

Reedie Farm, to the west of the town, has lodged proposals for a pair of chicken sheds, each holding 32,000 hens.

The plans include a space of around 60 acres for the birds to range.

The two sheds are planned to each be around 100m long and built at the base of existing wind turbines on the same site.

Reedie Farm, operated by Reedie Poultry Ltd, sits around two miles outside of Kirriemuir, but is situated just a few hundred metres away from the village of Westmuir.

It borders an existing £2.1 million free-range hen house and egg-packing facility at Lindertis Farm, which was approved by Angus Council in December 2025.

If approved, the plans mean a total of 96,000 chickens would be kept in the area.

Cogeo, who submitted the application on behalf of Reedie Farm, claims the cumulative noise of the three hen sheds would not cause annoyance, or regularly exceed 35decibels for local residents.

The planning application claims that the sheds would allow the poultry business to continue its growth.

The farm currently employs 25 people in full-time posts, with a further 25 working on a seasonal basis.

The plans do not, however, state how many jobs would be generated by the proposed expansion, or how much the project is expected to cost.

The application states: “The proposed hen sheds represent an opportunity for the farm to expand its agricultural operations and continue its growth.”

Similar large, free-range chicken sheds have been appearing in other locations across the county.

In May, a proposal for a 32,000-capacity hen shed at West Scryne Farm near Muirdrum, north of Carnoustie, was given the green light by Angus Council, subject to conditions.

The local authority also approved the Lindertis development, and two 32,000-capacity hen sheds in Muirhead and Carmyllie last year. A bid has also been made recently to provide a further large-scale chicken shed at Witton Farm, near Edzell.
