Phyllis was born in Monifieth but as her father was a minister the family moved to Gourock when she was four when he was appointed to a church there. She attended Gourock Primary school, then, after relocating to Dundee, Morgan Academy and after leaving school Phyllis worked for The Royal Bank of Scotland in Dundee.
Phyllis met her future husband Gordon at her 13th birthday party, and they got engaged when she was 19. Gordon served with the RAF in Burma during the war and in 1946 the couple married. They had three children - Patricia, Graham and Atholl - all of whom were born on the same date - May 24. Gordon was posted to Kolkata, where she joined him in 1948. They returned to Scotland in 1962 and settled in Carnoustie where Gordon Simpson was organist at Carnoustie Church for 39 years. Phyllis rounded off her celebrations with a party for family and friends at Westend Bowling Club at the weekend.
