A total of 240 participants have signed up to take part in the event, which is based at Montrose Sports Centre.

From there, participants will swim, bike and run their way around Montrose.

Entrants will either take part in the novice or sprint distances. The novice event is ideal for those taking part in their first triathlon and sees participants swim 400m, bike 12km and run 5km.

The sprint distance is for those with a little more experience or who are a little more daring. Contestants will swim 750m, bike 21km and run 5km.

Event organisers are calling on the support of the town to cheer participants on as they undertake their challenge.

Swimmers will start in the pool at 11am and there will be a steady stream of cyclists on course from 11.30am to 2pm.

The route takes them from the sports centre, round the harbour, over Rossie Island and up round by Ferryden, Dunninald and Usan before returning to the sports centre.

The final leg, the run, will see participants start from the sports centre and use the cycle path near the golf course, and turn round by the sea front splash. The event is expected to finish about 3pm.

Once again, organisers are delighted to have support from local businesses which include Agrii, Arbikie Highland Estates, Carnoustie Creative, Glenford, Links Hotel, Park Hotel, Sattva Wellness, Scotmid, Scottish Wildlife Trust and Tayside Mountain Rescue.

Maggie Lawrie, Tri Angus director, said: "It's great to be able to deliver the triathlons again this year.

"We were a little nervous about opening up entries but everyone has been keen to get back to action again.

"The Montrose Triathlon sold out the day entries opened in January, which was a pleasant surprise, and we have had a further 90 people join the waiting list.

"We are also very grateful for the continued support of local businesses for our events and, of course, the volunteers who help keep everyone safe on the day.

"We have a team of 60 volunteers this year and, without them, the event would not be possible."
