Eilish raced to victory on Monday afternoon at the FBK Continental Tour meet in Hengelo in Holland with a personal best of 30.19.02 in the 10,000 metres.

Her time set a new Scottish record, eclipsing mum Liz’s 30:57.07 from a meeting at the same Dutch track in June 1991.

Conditions weren’t ideal with athletes competing against a strong wind.

The race, too, didn’t pan out exactly as McColgan may have anticipated, the 31-year-old leading from the front and barely seeing another athlete for the duration as she led from gun to tape.

The victory continues an excellent start to the year for the Angus runner who believes there’s still more to come.

"If anything it’s given me the confidence that I can break 30 minutes, I know I can do it,” she said.

"I just need the right race, people around me and good weather.

"It was very windy and I’m quite tall so I felt like there were a couple of laps I was stumbling and thinking ‘please just make it to the line’.

"But it’s a Scottish record and my mum’s Scottish record that I break.

"My mum and my dad both set PBs on this track so for me to come 20 years later and break my PB, that’s pretty special.”

World Record holder, Ethopian Letesenbet Gidey, was amongst those chasing McColgan, all of them completely failing to eat into her lead. McColgan is now second on the UK all-time list behind Paula Radcliffe.
