Weir hopes win in cup will provide confidence boost

Forfar Athletic boss Jim Weir hopes a win in the Scottish Cup can give his players renewed confidence.

A 2-1 loss at Kelty Hearts on Saturday made it three League Two defeats on the bounce, dropping to second-bottom of the table.

It took the home side just two minutes to go in front as Zack Flatman had a free header at the back post from a Ross Cunningham corner.

Athletic drew level just shy of the half hour mark when Scott Shepherd redirected a Luca Perrie shot.

However, Kelty grabbed the winner nine minutes after the break with another free header from a corner, this time Innes Murray finding the net at the front post.

The hosts ended the match with 10 men when Gordon Walker was shown a red card, but it was too late for Athletic to take advantage of the extra man.

Their attention now turns to the second round of the Scottish Cup with a trip to Lowland League East side Bo’ness United.

Weir told the club’s media team: “We got off to a horrible start, it has been the story of the last three or four league games where we are not defending crosses, and indeed in both boxes we’ve been really weak.

"We are not aggressive enough, we don’t have the right movement or enough desire, and when you give away goals and miss chances the end result is defeat, which needs to stop!

"We’ve got a massive cup tie that financially means so much to the club and so much to the players, and we’ll need to find a result away from home to get some confidence within this group.”
