West End dish out a second-half demolition

West End went into this game with their recent form looking more promising after a convincing win in Dundee last weekend, writes Alan Samson.

But it was with more hope than real confidence as they were facing a Coupar Angus side who were taking big scalps and clearly progressing to be a top side.

Although there was good quality shown by both sides in an absorbing first half, neither keeper was called into action.

Forfar wingers McLaughlin and Smith were giving the Coupar defence a real headache.

Into the second half, and West End looked hungry to get in front.

Well marshalled by captain Baz Gourlay, they looked secure at the back and as time passed, they looked more likely to score first.

A good through ball found Benvie on the right, 20 yards out. Taking everyone by surprise, the in-form striker struck a crisp shot which beat the keeper into the bottom corner.

Not out to defend a narrow lead, West poured forward, looking to kill the game off. After several good attacks, Smith swung the ball in from the right. Up rose Samson to power a header into the net.

The game now looked safe as Coupar tried to get forward but were met with a wall of defiance at the back. Njie showed his striker instincts by timing a run into the box and prodding home number 3.

This was a vital win that breeds confidence.
