Saturday saw the return of the Forfar derby in the Midlands League, writes Alan Samson.

Both sides made changes for the fixture, and looking at league positions, West End were favourites for the points.

But from the first whistle it was clear United were the more eager side and appeared to be winning the battles all over the pitch, quickly putting West End on the back foot.

It was no surprise when Hampton gave them an early lead.

West End could not get a grip of the game and United forged further ahead with a near post headed goal by Birse.

Within minutes, a carbon-copy, Birse from a header again, put United further ahead , effectively finishing the game as a contest.

A big missed chance by West End on the stroke of half-time seemed to take away much hope of a comeback.

The second half proved a more even contest but United retained control and a fourth was added late in the game.

United ran out the deserved winners and cannot be grudged their celebrations.

For West End, this was a sore one, a poor performance, but one they must learn from and quickly put behind them with much to play for in the weeks ahead.
