The draw, coupled with Annan’s 4-1 win over Stranraer, saw a three point gap open between Athletic and the Galabank side.

Cricually, though, there’s a further four point gap behind Irvine’s men to fourth placed Edinburgh City and seven to Stenhousemuir following the Warriors’ 1-0 defeat to Kelty Hearts on Tuesday night.

Forfar also have a game in hand over Annan so a place inside the top four is still very much in Irvine’s side’s hands.

Despite that, the manager felt it was an opportunity missed at the weekend, not helped by a strong penalty shout being snubbed with 15 minutes to go.

The manager told forfarathletic.co.co.uk: “If I’m honest, I’m still angry.

"Some big decisions went against us but I don’t want to pin it all on the officials.

"We didn’t create enough, nothing clear-cut.

"Although there was a lot of pressure - we kept Elgin pinned in for long periods - too many times we took the wrong option when sending balls into their box.

“Still, those big decisions leave me annoyed, especially the one in the second half. Scott Shepherd was through on goal and went down. Which makes no sense. Why would he do that when he is in front of the defender and is going to score a goal? For there to be no foul there - and no action taken on the defender - isn't good. It has played a big part in the game. But we have to move on now.”

This weekend Forfar play host to Stirling Albion who beat Cowdenbeath 2-1 on Tuesday evening.
