Montrose reinforce promotion credentials at Dumbarton

The manner of the victory, which saw Stewart Petrie’s side recover from an early Sons opener, was pleasing, as was the look on the League One table post-match, which now sees Montrose sit a clear second, five points ahead of third place Queen’s Park.

Mo may have played a game more than a couple of those in behind them, but there’s no doubt the Links Park side remain one of the country’s form teams.

They had to dig in at the weekend, though, after Connor Duthie’s effort with quarter of an hour gone put Stevie Farrell’s side ahead.

Dumbarton went in to the fixture aiming to edge their way away from the wrong end of the division and felt they had given themselves a platform to build.

But Petrie’s men rolled up their sleeves and would shrug off the set-back to win a valuable three points.

Graham Webster is so often the man who comes to his side’s rescue and he leveled matters on 32 minutes from the penalty spot.

Dumbarton had barely time to recover before Montrose had added a second, Webster again finding the net.

The Angus side knew they needed to get a third, which would kill off their hosts, and took just 15 minutes after the interval to score it through Liam Callaghan.

Montrose return to Links Park this weekend when they face third place Queen’s Park.

Saturday’s game presents the perfect chance for Petrie’s Mo to kick some daylight between themselves and the chasing pack.
