Montrose hit 10 on their way to cup final

Edinburgh Caledonia were simply blown apart by the Angus side who swatted their visitors away 10-1.

They set the tone straight away, taking the lead with barely five minutes on the clock when Flo Bruce collected Eilidh Reid’s cross and sent a terrific finish over the visiting keeper and into the back of the net.

The opener settled any pre-match nerves right away and Montrose were determined to add to their lead.

But Edinburgh were asking questions of their own and Lauren Sangster was at her best to block a decent attempt.

The save had a positive effect on the local side and they doubled their lead when Anna Grant finished neatly.

Montrose were now into an excellent tempo and they went a long way to putting the tie beyond doubt shortly before the half hour mark when Grant made it 3-0.

Edinburgh City threatened to make a game of it when Sangster could do absolutely nothing about Natalie Brown’s header, which looped into the back of the net.

Again, though, Montrose reacted well and Grant secured her hat-trick before the break when she restored her side’s three goal cushion.

With a place in the final now very much in their own hands, Montrose simply had to remain professional and see the game out.

They did that, and then some, refusing to take their foot off the gas.

Edinburgh had no answer to a second half onslaught.

Aimee Ridgeway wasted no time after the interval in making it 5-1 to the Angus side before the same player added number six.

The substitutions started to roll and the fresh legs had the desired effect for Montrose who stayed on the front foot.

Ridgeway matched Grant’s hat-trick effort by making it 7-1 on 67 minutes after another excellent delivery from Reid.

History was to repeat for the side’s eighth goal, Reid again provider for Ridgeway.

Edinburgh, by this stage, would have been pleading inside their own heads for the game to end, but Montrose weren’t done.

Sub Chelsey Lownie got in on the act to put the side on the verge of double figures on 79 minutes.

The incentive to reach the magic 10 goals was there and it was one Montrose grabbed with both hands.

Grant, who had been magnificent throughout the 90 minutes, was the one to notch it and confirm the cup final place.

Montrose will now face Dryburgh Girls in the final of the competition on November 28 at the Falkirk Stadium.

Prices for supporters are £5 for adults and £2 for children and concessions.

Focus now shifts back to the club’s Scottish Women's Championship North campaign with a trip to Stonehaven next up.

The game is scheduled for Sunday, November 14 with a 2pm kick-off.

Montrose currently lead the division with a perfect eight wins from eight games this season.
