City went into the game, played on Friday night, hopeful of bagging the three points at home and muscling back into the play-off race.

Instead they were taught a lesson on their home patch by a ruthless Forfar side who raced into a three goal lead by the break and netted their fourth just a couple of minutes after the restart.

There were so many positives to take for boss Irvine who said the desire and appetite being shown from week-to-week by his squad is impressive.

With his side comfortable in the lead, he was able to introduce players from the bench who were in need of game time.

"I see guys pushing to get a game in training all the time,” he told the club’s social media channel post-match.

"That’s part of what we are picking up points.

"Those not in the team are pushing to get a game and are desperate to get on the pitch.

"They all added to the job the eleven starters had already done.

"Which is all I can ask from any player.

"They’ve given me some things to think about.

“I’m delighted at the way we approached the game, the scoreline and the quality of the goals we scored.”

On Sunday Forfar return to Station Park for a Boxing Day encounter with Stenhousemuir.

Stenny go into the game on the back of consecutive draws while Irvine’s Forfar are on a four game winning streak.
