Angus clubs have reason to be cheerful

There is certain to be end of season promotion play-off drama in Angus.

Montrose’s win away to Falkirk saw them clinch a top four place in League One and Stewart Petrie’s side will now play their final games before competing for a place in next season’s Championship.

At Stranraer, a 2-0 win for Forfar Athletic saw them also reach the promotion play-offs in League Two and Gary Irvine will be aiming to guide his side to an immediate return to League One next year.

At the time of writing, Arbroath were not mathematically assured of a place in the Championship’s promotion play-offs but that now appears a formality.

Of course, Dick Campbell’s side are still battling for the second-tier title and may pip Kilmarnock to the league and an automatic promotion spot.

This weekend Lichties travel to Hamilton Accies before then hosting Queen of the South.

Sadly there will be no immediate return to League Two for Brechin City after their title hopes were ended at the weekend despite a 4-0 win over Clachnacuddin.

A run of magnificent late season form hasn’t been enough to help hoist them to the top of the Highland League.

After a couple of difficult years it's been a season of positivity at Glebe Park, though, and Andy Kirk’s men know they’ll end the campaign inside the top three of the division, providing them with a platform to build next year.

In the Midlands League, Phil McGuire’s Carnoustie Panmure remain six points ahead at the top of the division in its maiden season.
