Popular Montrose takeaways up for national award

Local politicians dropped in on a Montrose takeaway this week to wish staff good luck in this year’s British Kebab Awards.

Angus MP Dave Doogan and Mairi Gougeon, Angus North MSP, visited 5 in 1 on Hume Street which has been nominated in the Best Kebab House in Scotland category.

The business will be up against nine others from across Scotland, including fellow local establishment Dino’s Pizza, which is just along the street.

The takeaway, run by Dave and Indi Singh, offers delicious food to Montrose and the surrounds, and has been a family-run business since 1992.

Mr Doogan said: “It was brilliant to visit 5 in 1 to congratulate them on their nomination personally, and it was fantastic to meet Dave, Indi, Ajay and Gummy, and try some delicious food.

“This nomination highlights the excellence of their produce, and as their MP, I’m extremely proud to see yet another Angus business go from strength to strength. I hope very much to be able to join the team from 5 in 1 and support them at the awards ceremony in London.”

In all there are 20 awards on offer, with categories ranging from Best Newcomer and Chef of the Year to Best Kebab Van, Customer Satisfaction as well as the eight awards for the best kebabs restaurants across the UK.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Westminster Bridge Hotel in London on February 28.

Ms Gougeon added: "The Fivey is a Montrose institution and I'm delighted to see that they have been nominated for this award.

"Montrose has a great and growing reputation for its food offering and with the team at the 5 in 1 and their focus on quality, homemade flavours and ingredients it’s no wonder this has been recognised."

The kebab industry is now estimated to be worth more than £2.8bn to the British economy and every day, more than 1.5m kebabs are sold across Britain.

There are now over 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK selling around 2,500 tonnes of lamb and chicken doner a week.

Organisers have said that this year’s awards will be bigger and better than previous year’s, reflecting the growth across the business despite the recent challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
