Eligible Angus voters urged to register

The Scottish Council Elections will be held on Thursday, May 5 and polling cards with your designated polling station will be delivered to your home address before the poll.

Voters do not need to take polling cards with them on the day to vote and polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

Turnout rates in some areas of Angus in the 2017 council elections was as low as 35%.

Mr Doogan said: “Whether people have voted in every election or never before it remains vitally important that voters turn out for the upcoming council election. To be eligible, people must be registered to vote before April 18th if they are not already registered.

“Voting is so important as the next council will be serving us for the upcoming five years. As a former local councillor I know first-hand the responsibility councils have for the real day to day issues that affect our communities such as; schools, housing, planning, roads, social care and the environment to name just a few .

“In Scotland, people aged over 16 years can vote. If constituents are unsure if they are registered, it is very easy to check, especially if people may have moved home or had any change in circumstance.

“People can register to vote, or to find out if they are registered to vote, at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and follow the steps. They will be asked for their National Insurance number; however, they can still register to vote without this. If anyone requires help registering to vote, they can get in touch with my office for further advice.”

People can register to vote in Scotland if they are 16 or over for Council and Scottish Parliament elections; 18 or over for UK and European Parliament elections; a UK or Irish citizen; a qualifying Commonwealth citizen an EU citizen or a qualifying foreign citizen in Scotland.
