Broughty Ferry councillor given top role

Broughty Ferry councillor Kevin Cordell has been named as Dundee’s new Deputy Lord Provost.

Mr Cordell served as Community Safety & Public Protection convener in the last administration and his new appointment comes after the SNP won a majority on Dundee City Council.

The announcement came as party leader John Alexander, has also unveiled several other key roles in the new administration.

He said: “The SNP gained one seat in the West End, taking the group to fifteen and a majority – the only SNP majority in Scotland.

“With nearly double the first preference votes of Labour, the SNP received a mandate to take control of the council without requiring the support of any other political party.

“Our team are energised and focused and from the very start our SNP administration will be getting to grips with a diverse and challenging agenda, which includes the current cost of living crisis. I’m delighted that our team’s hard work was recognised at the ballot box but now we must prove that people’s faith was well placed and that is exactly what we plan to do.”

Mr Cordell said that he was delighted to be re-elected to represent the Ferry ward.

He continued: “It is a humbling experience to be asked to represent the area you live and grew up in and it is an honour to be asked to take up the role of Deputy Lord Provost. I’m really looking forward to working with the Provost and leader of the administration in not only meeting the challenges we face but also continuing the progress we have seen in the city.”

The other key appointments are: Lord Provost - Bill Campbell; Neighbourhood services convener Heather Anderson, deputy convener Nadia El-Nakla; City development convener Mark Flynn, deputy convener Steven Rome; Community safety and public protection convener Christina Roberts; deputy convener Lynne Short; Children and families service convener Stewart Hunter, deputy convener Roisin Smith; Policy and resources convener John Alexander, deputy convener Willie Sawers​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
