Visit to hear about Carnoustie group's community work

Angus South MSP Graeme Dey paid a visit to Food is Free Carnoustie recently to find out about the group’s work in the town.

The Food is Free movement supports important community building and gardening efforts, with projects established around the world since it was established in Austin, Texas, in 2012.

Its purpose is to transform neglected spaces into community gardens. Once the fruit and veg is harvested, it is displayed in various public spaces and offered free to anyone who wants it.

Food is Free began in Carnoustie in 2015 with the general ambition of inspiring people to improve their community at a local level. The project encourages people to eat fresh food, grow their own produce, think locally, and improve their mental well-being through gardening.

Mr Dey said: “It was inspiring to see such community involvement in an initiative which offers great benefits to both the local area and overall environment – critical in a time when we must all consider how our actions impact our climate and surroundings.

“I was also encouraged to see that Food is Free offers various volunteering roles and actively brings people together. The team is always looking for helping hands to support their efforts.”
