Surprise award recognises dedication of Carnoustie community worker

A Carnoustie community worker was surprised recently with a special presentation in recognition of her work in the town.

Kirsty MacDonald received the unexpected award at a presentation in Carnoustie’s Royal British Legion hall.

A native of Aberdeen, she has lived in the town for over 50 years, during which time she has looked after the catering for numerous British Legion functions every year.

More recently, since just before the Covid pandemic, Kirsty masterminded and ran, with the aid of a small team of volunteers, the town’s Foodbank, based at the Royal British Legion.

With a demanding weekly schedule of deliveries to many needy families, she had to constantly seek and find a wide range of foodstuffs to distribute, while at the same time maintaining a much-needed flow of cash donations to help supplement supplies.

Her work has now been recognised by Friends of Carnoustie and District Heritage, whose chairperson Robbie Murray presented Kirsty with a Certificate of Lifelong Membership for her many years of dedicated service to the townspeople of Carnoustie.

Mr Murray said: “Kirsty has worked tirelessly to supply weekly food parcels for well over a hundred families in the town and my committee wanted to recognise her hard work.

“It had to be a surprise event for Kirsty because the last thing she wants is attention and publicity.

“She is a living part of our town’s heritage so, this presentation was a must.”
