SSEN launches series of webinars to discuss north of Scotland network upgrade

SSEN Transmission is this week launching a new webinar series to share more about its ambitions to upgrade the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland.

‘Delivering a Network for Net Zero’, which will be held on Friday (September 29), will seek to explain the necessity of providing energy security in the UK, and delivering on the Government’s climate change targets.

It follows the recent release findings by Holyrood’s Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee that Scotland’s electricity infrastructure urgently needs more capacity if national net zero targets are to be met.

SSEN Transmission’s £10bn programme of upgrades, known as the ‘Pathway to 2030’, involves creating new electricity transmission infrastructure across the north of Scotland to help connect new renewable energy generation to the national grid and take it to where it will be used.

The webinars have been created to help share more information about the critical projects that are being delivered across the north of Scotland and will feature insights from the team at SSEN Transmission, as well as special guests from across the industry.

The first webinar will consider the big picture when it comes to the ever-changing use of electricity in modern society, and what infrastructure is needed to support the substantial growth of renewable energy in the UK’s energy mix as the country heads towards a net zero future. National Grid ESO will also provide an insight into the key role they are playing in shaping the GB energy system’s integrated approach.

The webinar, which will be held between 10am and 11.30am, is open to anyone, and attendees can register on SSEN Transmission’s website. All webinars will be recorded and can be viewed after the event.

Rob McDonald, from SSEN, said: “It’s a complex process that will be delivered at a scale not previously seen since the transmission grid was first built in the 1950s. That’s why we’ve launched a new webinar series, to further explain the need for these projects and how we plan to deliver on it all. We encourage anyone who is interested to sign up to attend and submit questions for our panel to consider.”
