Sports facilities open to wider community

President Lynne Slater welcomed members of Letham & District SWI to their latest meeting and introduced Alec Whyte, guest speaker for the evening.

His topic was 'the Welfare System in Forfar in the 19th and early 20th Centuries'.

This proved to be a really fascinating and sensitive yet humorous insight into the trials and difficulties of life for the working man – especially the poorer paid in the community – before the establishment of the National Health Service.

Mr Whyte also explained the names of various streets and old buildings in Forfar and the benefactors remembered by them.

He was warmly thanked by Betty Abercromby.
