Sustainable Kirriemuir is getting ready to celebrate all things tuber as it prepares a day centred on one of Scotland’s most popular and versatile vegetables – the potato.

Kirriemuir Tattie Day will take place on February 25 and will offer a veritable feast of activities offering a chance for gardeners and growers, whether novice or expert, to get together and go tattie daft over seed potatoes.

Experts from Potato House (Skea Organics) will offering speciality, heritage and organic seed tatties and eaters and 30 varieties are expected to be available on the day.

Vegetable and flower seeds can be swapped with fellow growers and all things veg c can be discussed with expert growers Emily and Rose. The group’s community cooks will demonstrate just how versatile tatties can be by serving up a terrific tattie-tasting menu - and there will be stovies served over lunch.

Experts John M Marshall and Andrew Skea will be on hand to answer tattie-related questions, from which variety to choose to pest and disease issues.

A Sustainable Kirriremuir spokesperson said: “We have a packed program of speakers. Our local permaculture expert Kate Everett will be talking about climate-resilient growing and Fiona Guest of Scotia Seeds won’t disappoint with her talk on wildflowers and leaving space for nature.

"Our panel of farming experts will be discussing what it means to farm in a changing climate and our headliner John Marshall will be asking ‘What's all the fuss?’ about heritage potatoes.

“There will be an opportunity to meet our local producers with stalls from zero waste shop A Longer Table, Jist Jute, Rottal Vegetable Garden, and Scotia Seeds. Angus Outdoor Learning will be bringing the fun indoors and will be offering activities for young and old while the Potato Head Crew will be using the humble tattie to show you how to make bold and colourful prints on recycled materials.”

Tickets for the event, which will be held in Kirrie Town Hall, between 12pm and 4pm, cost £2 for adults are available online and at the door. Details can be found at www.sustainablekirriemuir.co.uk.
