Arbroath Amateur Boxing Club, an institution that has been in existence for over 60 years, has produced some talented boxers over the years. Sadly, the club was finding it tough as a result of the restrictions placed on it because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Like many organisations, Arbroath ABC has had to make huge changes to running of the club and has also had to relocate its training base.

The club’s previous headquarters was Arbroath Community Centre, which is currently being used a vaccine centre. This switch resulted in the boxers having to train outside when regulations and weather allowed.

However, as winter approached they had to relocate and are now using Arbirlot Church Hall as their new base.Arbroath ABC President, Eric Buick said: “As a result of Covid, all competitions and other fundraising activities came to a halt, resulting in a lack of income for the club, and a significant downturn in cashflow.

“Thankfully, two benefactors came to the aid of the club. David “Scoobie” Webster, a dedicated supporter of many years made a generous personal donation. Additionally, cash was raised from a collection at the funeral of Bill Hamilton who had a long association with the club. The donation was made through the auspices of the Arbroath Area Full Bore Gun Club, of which Bill was also a member.”The funding was gratefully received and the cumulative total was in excess of £1000, allowing the club to return to its mainstream activity of coaching aspiring boxers of all ages.

The club currently has a real mix of boys, girls and adults and provides excellent opportunities for all its members to keep themselves fit.Arbroath ABC is open from 6.30pm to 8.30pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
