Buddy benches to help people reconnect

Residents around Brechin and the wider district are being encouraged to take time for themselves and others with a new initiative by Brechin Healthcare Group (BHG).

The group has placed several ‘buddy benches’ across the DD9 area to help people to reconnect with each other while they are out and about.

The colourful benches, which are made from recycled plastic and will last for years with no maintenance costs, are similar to those which are being placed in school playgrounds to help promote inclusion among pupils.

BHG provided the benches in response to continued feelings of isolation and loneliness some people were experiencing, even after Covid-19 guidance restrictions were eased.

A group spokesperson said: “BHG were successful in receiving funding from both The National Lottery and NHS Tayside Community Innovation Fund to purchase benches to place around the community.

“Plaques have been placed on each bench suggesting that people “make time for a seat and a chat”.

Not only will folk meet others when out for a walk but certainly the one on Cookson Road will provide a welcome seat on the way up the hill.”

The bench at Edzell Muir also has a dedication to one of BHG’s trustees, Lindsay Cameron – a local vet, who helped decide on that location but who sadly died just a few days later.

The benches have been installed with the support of Angus Council which provided suitable sites for them.
