The carers, who work for Unicare-Homecare Ltd, have been running a works’ lottery, which has raised almost £1800 for good causes across Angus.

The idea was put forward in the spring of this year by senior homecare assistant Jillian Low, who said she was keen to help out some local causes.

She said: “I particularly wanted to support small charities or groups who rely on donations to carry on their work, and would really appreciate a small financial boost around Christmas time.

"Running a private work's lottery seemed a simple and ideal way to raise funds. I offered colleagues to pick number(s) from 1-50 at £2 each, and drew a lucky number weekly; £50 was given out as a prize, and £50 set aside for donations.”

The idea was well-supported and Jillian’s colleagues decided where the money would be donated.

She added: "Around 18 staff members have taken part. It has been very successful, raising £1800. It seemed only fair that I let the participants choose where they would like the money to go to, and I'm delighted that such good causes were suggested, covering the whole of the Angus area.”

Jillian recently handed over cheques for £450 to Forfar Action Network, which provides the town's Christmas lights; Angus Women's Aid, which provides practical and emotional support for women and their families who have experienced domestic abuse; Animal Rescue Centre Arbroath, which provides an Angus-wide service; and the Adam Centre in Montrose which provides day-care and social activities for older people.

Jillian continued: “It was lovely to meet representatives from each organisation and to hear about the work they all do. A representative from Angus Women's aid informed me that the number of women and families they support has gone up by 40% since the Covid19 pandemic. The Animal Rescue Centre has also been affected by the pandemic, as they have not been able to hold as many fundraising events, so again, our donation is much appreciated. The Adam Centre are to use the money for a Christmas party.”
