Annual Apple Extravaganza returns to Kirrie with appeal for all

The middle of Kirriemuir is likely to be a doctor-free zone next Saturday, when all things apples will be on the menu at the town’s Guide Hall.

Kirriemuir Apple Extravaganza is returning for another year as part of Sustainable Kirriemuir’s continuing Nourish Project.

The two-year project is dedicated to cutting local food waste by six tonnes, growing two tonnes of food locally and engaging 500 people in the climate emergency.

It was borne out of an increasing interest in the town to better value resources, live lighter on the planet, tackle climate change and ensure sustainability for future generations.

It also provides the public with information to make more sustainable choices and the annual Apple Day raises awareness of seasonality, referring to the fact that most foods can only be grown and harvested at certain times of the year due to the climate, rather than grown or imported using more carbon-intensive methods.

During autumn, trees across Angus will be heaving with ready to pick and eat apples and, to share the bounty, Sustainable Kirrie is saving apples from local gardens that would otherwise just rot on the ground and go to waste.

A sustainable Kirriemuir spokesperson said: “Apple Day is all about helping us to use up the apple glut and enjoy the seasonal produce on our doorsteps.

"You can come along on Saturday, October 30 to try and buy some Kirrie Apple Juice. You will be able to take home a free recipe kit of your choice, including all of the ingredients you need to make your own apple crumble. There will be seasonal, spooky face painting available and the chance to go on a fantastic treasure trail around the town.

"Each shop taking part in the treasure trail will have tasters available and produce to buy made using our fantastic bounty of apples, including pork and apple sausages, apple crumble blondies and apple pie. Come along on your bikes and have them serviced by VeloTech for free too.

“We appreciate donations and encourage you to drop off your clean spare apples to the Roods Co-op Kiosk, who will be helping us to store them or please feel free to bring along your clean apples on the day for juicing.”

The event will run at the Guide Hall, on the Roods, between 11am and 3pm.
