Discover the health and well-being benefits of historic sites

Outdoor adventure advocate Matty Hyndman has teamed up with Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and encouraging people across Angus to take time out and discover the well-being benefits of the country’s most historic places.

Of visitors to Historic Environment Scotland sites in 2025/26, 59% reported an improvement in their well-being after spending time at a site.

To help more people experience these benefits, Matty and his dog River are highlighting the unique opportunities to explore history and nature at sites across the country.

Best known for his TV appearance as a Faithful on BBC’s The Traitors, Matty inspires people to get outdoors through his social media channels.

He said: “It is so important to broaden your horizons, get out of your usual routine and really make the most of your spare time.

“Spending some time in nature is a brilliant way to clear your head and reconnect with yourself. One of the great things about Angus is that you can discover these incredible historic places with fascinating stories.

“We can all be guilty of overlooking some of these places that are right on our doorstep. You don’t always need to travel far, it’s just about getting outdoors, exploring somewhere new and soaking up the history and nature benefits.”

HES has listed the top five places where visitors can experience well-being benefits and take in their rich history.

The five sites are:-

Edzell Castle and Garden – famous for its distinctive grounds and gardens; Aberdour Castle and Gardens - One of Scotland’s oldest standing castles with one of the oldest gardens; Culross Abbey - 13th century church and former Cistercian monastery overlooking the Firth of Forth; Lochleven Castle - The island fortress where Mary, Queen of Scots spent almost a year as a prisoner; Elcho Castle – The 16th century country home for a local laird and Lady.

Roger Curtis, Interim Director of Operations at HES, said: “Whether it's exploring a castle, wandering through a garden or simply taking in the view, we hope this campaign encourages people to discover the many ways they can enjoy historic places.”
