Angus MP urges Chancellor to do more for struggling families

The Chancellor today announced a 1p cut to income tax and cuts to fuel duty following weeks of record high prices, but in the midst of the cost of living crisis, there was no announcement on cuts to energy costs for families with children who are living with life-limiting conditions.

Dave Doogan MP called for Chancellor to consider the impact the cost of living crisis is having on children with life-shortening conditions, following calls from the Children Hospices Across Scotland Charity CHAS.

CHAS has identified that some families are reporting their bill estimates going up from £268 to £720 a month, an almost 270% increase.

Commenting, Dave said: “People are unable to keep up with the cost of living crisis, and the Chancellor has not gone far enough to help those struggling the most. Children with life-shortening conditions are often at home which needs to be kept warm 24 hours a day, 7 days a week often with specialist equipment running constantly.

“The Chancellor must do more, and act now in support those who are trying to do everything they can for their families.

“People with caring responsibilities are least able to modify their income and expenditure so the responsibility rests with Government to support them – that is the hallmark of a civilised society.”
