Kirrie pupils get active in defence of environment

Sustainable Kirriemuir and local artist Victoria Wylie have been working with Northmuir and Southmuir schools over the last 15 months as part of their outdoor learning and learning for sustainability activities.

It also tied in with the Nourish Kirriemuir Project, funded by the Climate Challenge Fund, which aims to engage 500 local people in the climate emergency.

The Co-op on the Roods collected cardboard to donate to the schools, which the pupils then turned into artistic placards using pens, pencils and paint.

Each placard made a statement about what action the children want to see for the future of our planet. Phrases such as ‘save the bees’ and ‘save the trees’ were popular while ‘no more coal, no more oil, keep the carbon in our soil’ also appeared.

More than 300 pupils then marched around their playgrounds with their placards to raise awareness of their plight, demonstrating their desire for a more sustainable future.

The placards have been on display at the Co-op for the last two weeks but will be moved to Northmuir’s perimeter fence during the COP26 conference.
