Arbroath High School pupils planting trees to enhance school grounds

The project will involve the pupils planting 420 trees in the academy's grounds.

Arbroath High School pupils will help to plant more than 400 trees in the school grounds after securing funding through the Woodland Trust’s Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.

Rachel Scott, acting deputy head, said: “We were delighted when we found out we’d been chosen to buy trees for the school. We wanted to bring trees and planting closer to the school buildings and particularly closer to our support for learning classrooms and learning spaces so applied for this funding to plant trees.

“Having these trees is also a great ongoing learning project, with our youngest young people in S1 and S2 creating the woodland area and continuing to care for and monitor the trees in their six years at school, before they hand it on to future generations of AHS young people.”

Councillor Ron Sturrock, children and learning convener, said: “What a fantastic opportunity for our young children to learn about the importance of trees in the fight against climate change but to improve and enhance their school environment at the same time.”

The project is a unique initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, encouraging individuals and groups to enhance the environment by planting trees.
