Well-known Montrose hotel goes on the market

Believed to be one of the oldest coaching inns in Scotland, The Star Hotel will go under the hammer at auction in November, with a guide price of £250,000.

The hotel will be open to bids at Auctions House Scotland’s in-room auction, which will take place on Thursday, November 3 at the Radisson RED hotel in Glasgow.

The auction will also be live streamed allowing interested bidders the option to watch online, with telephone, proxy and internet available.

The well-established 15-bedroom hotel, which dates back to around 1765, enjoys a prime central location on New Wynd, just off the town’s High Street.

Before the South Esk was first bridged in 1795, it was the northern terminus and posting house for coaches arriving from, and proceeding to, the North. Until the early 1960s the Star Arch at the end of New Wynd was a famous local landmark.

The premises extends to approximately 1090 sq. metres (11,700 sq. feet) over four levels and include a basement with cellar.

The ground floor offers a traditional front bar area, a back bar with pool table, dart boards and DJ booth. Also on the ground floor is a sizeable storage room, back bar storage and male/female WCs and office

On the first floor are two function suites, ‘Rock Bar’ and lounge area, breakfast/dining room and kitchen.

The second and third floors accommodate the 15 en-suite rooms, while the owner’s accommodation lounge, fitted kitchen and one en-suite bedroom, is also found on the second floor.

Mandi Cooper, Auction House Scotland managing director, said: “Our clients have operated the business since 2010 and are selling due to a well-earned retirement. They have created a strong trading business with continually high room occupancy throughout the year, largely driven by contractor business, as well as a popular local pub.

“Although currently operated on a bed and breakfast basis, there is a great opportunity to further increase revenue through the addition of an extended restaurant/pub food service.”
