The popular Forfar venue took the top spot in the Beer Quality category (in association with Tennent’s) at The SLTN (Scottish Licensed Trade News) Awards.
The SLTN Awards is the annual search for the country’s best venues, operators and staff and 2021 saw the 25th anniversary of these prestigious industry honours.
The ceremony, which was well attended, was hosted by TV personality David Walliams and took place at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel last month.
Susan Campbell, who owns and manages The Stag alongside husband, Graeme, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won the Beer Quality Award for Scotland. It has been a lot of work to raise our standards to a high and consistent level recognised by Tennent’s.”
She added: “We are so proud and we aim to maintain the standard and hopefully retain this status again next year.”
The award is a sweet victory for the venue having entered previously without success.
Posting on their Facebook page, the owners said they were delighted to be the winners of the award and that they had been shortlisted for it two years ago but fell short on a few minors but this year they made it to the final three and won.
The Stag also thanked all their customers who made it all worthwhile and without them it would not have been possible.
Customers have also congratulated The Stag on the venue’s Facebook page too.
Originally a hotel, The Stag maintains some of the original features and has been extended to accommodate the cafe upstairs which offers afternoon teas with freshly made sandwiches and scones. Downstairs, the restaurant caters for lunch and evening meals and also serves a traditional Sunday Roast.
In addition to its award-winning beer, the bar stocks a wide variety of locally produced alcoholic beverages including Gin Bothy and Red Castle liqueur gins, Dundee Gin, Strathbraan Ale and Fetercairn Whisky and at weekends, there’s usually live music and entertainment in the bar too.
