Snappy first year for The Lobster Shop's seafood business

Hogmanay marked the first full year of trading for a North-east business established during some of the most difficult commercial circumstances in recent years.

The Lobster Shop, a family venture located at Johnshaven's harbourside, was completed as a newbuild project in late 2020, and has proudly showcased some of the best seafood and local produce that Scotland’s North-east has to offer.

Visitors have flocked to the coastal village throughout the year, eager to experience the flavour and richness of carefully prepared lobster and crab, presented through a variety of simple but compelling recipes that clearly demonstrating a passion for shellfish.

Set in the heart of the nation’s creel fishing industry, The business is supplied daily with the finest of catches straight from the local fleet. Visitors can observe the creel fishing boats operating offshore or engage with staff members who are keen to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for sustainable seafood.

Loren McBay, who runs the busienss, said: “It’s an absolute joy to see customers appreciate just how tasty our local seafood can be and relish the opportunity to take a pre-cooked lobster or shellfish platter home to share with family and friends.”

The Lobster Shop, through a mix of educational media, presentations and events aims to promote more than just the delightful taste of local Scottish seafood.

Loren continued: “For over 75 years our family has played a key part in the supply of fresh Scottish shellfish to wholesalers, retailers and restaurants across the UK and Europe, working closely with our local fishers and developing lasting relationships. We now have a greater opportunity to present how our combined skills and techniques advocate responsible and sustainable creel fishing for the future.

“We are determined to continue celebrating everything that our rich and diverse coastal environment has to offer.

If we can get those taste buds hooked, we can encourage greater interest in creel fishing & seafood production as a viable and exciting sector to be involved in.”
